According to the Governor's Energy Office, the current average price for heating oil in Maine is $4.10 per gallon. The Department of Energy in New Hampshire has the current average price at $4.16 per gallon, with both sources reporting kerosene prices to be around $5.00 per gallon.

With these increased prices, Maine and New Hampshire residents continue to face the tough decision of turning their heat on versus throwing on layers of clothes and blankets to stay warm. The time may not have come yet, but it soon won't be a decision as the days and nights continue to get colder.

Often times, the month of October and even part of November is doable with some blankets and warm clothes, but those days will be coming to an end sooner than later.

We asked some Maine and New Hampshire residents how long they plan to hold off until the inside chill just becomes too unbearable. The results may surprise you.

As people continue to be cautious of spending, a recent Facebook poll revealed that most will, or have already chosen, to be comfortable in their homes.

Heat is already on: 52%

Only when it's absolutely necessary: 35%

Not until at least November 1st: 13%

Unfortunately, the harsh reality is that energy costs are not expected to go down anytime soon. This combined with general inflation have many residents in both states continuing to have a hard time paying their monthly heating bill, but there may be help.

If you live in Maine, you can apply for the Home Energy Assistance Program through Maine Housing. These benefits include assistance with helping to pay for heating fuel and emergency fuel delivery. New Hampshire residents can apply for a similar program through the NH Department of Energy.
