Who Wants to Name an Entire Building in Lewiston?
Now, this is a community-involved event! Most citizens want to be connected in what "decision-makers" are doing and this is a great start to a more interactive connection locally! In Lewiston, a contest is being held to name a new recreational complex with a large field and sledding hill at the bottom of Barlett Street.
The Lewiston Youth Advisory Council is heading on the contest, so if you want to throw your potential building name in the hat, your deadline is December 16th!
The property connects to Lewiston High School and Connors Elementary School via a path from the Franklin Pasture complex. Presumably to make it easier for kids to head on over to the field after school?
A firm date has not been given yet according to a press release from officials but it is "nearing completion". Fencing will also be installed.
Once the name has been chosen by a lucky local, there will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The Youth Council and City Staff will evaluate the submissions and according to a Sun Journal article, "could produce interview for top suggestions" but the City Council will have the final word on who has won.
I'm hoping that the City Council will approve what the Youth Council suggests since they have been supportive of the Youth Council being involved in earlier efforts to name parks in the city.
It's important to note that the group plans to pick a naming rights sponsor for the athletic field after the park part is named as well.
If you're like me, you may not know everything so let me define naming rights. According to Asking Lot, naming rights are a financial transaction and form of advertising whereby a corporation or other entity purchases the right to name a facility or event, typically for a defined period of time.
Since there will be two separate names, one for the complex and one for the field, do you think it will be complicated? It has been said by the Mayor, Mark Cayer that "bringing too many names down to that location may be too confusing for the public."
This is a naming contest for the community to come together and connect with each other and to act on something that holds legacy, length, and the ability to be a part of local history.
These types of contests are needed for towns to promote connection and even the ability to share a really cool story with your grandchildren one day. You can say that a piece of you lives within a building in your own city, that in many many years will still bring much joy and happiness to children and adults alike.
This naming contest is engaging and we can't wait to see who wins and what the complex will be called! Let's continue to encourage hope amongst our citizens, most importantly, our next generation.
