Westbrook Police and other agencies have begun sharing information on a new "hostage" phone scam. Scammers are calling victims on their cellphones and telling them that they have kidnapped their significant other or family member. They often go as far as to threaten to shoot their "hostage" if the victim calls the police. In return for releasing the "hostage" to safety, they ask you to wire them money.

Pretty slimy, right? If you recieve a similar call, don't follow their demands! Instead, gather as much descriptive information as you can and contact local law enforcement.

PS: A good rule of thumb is to never wire money to someone you don't know.
