To the Portland Police Department,

I need to thank you! We all know how annoying scammers are. Getting phone calls at all hours of the day, voicemails that we don't understand, and money that we don't have to give.

I personally cannot tell you how many calls I get on a daily basis and some even in another language.  It's getting to the point where I will not even answer the phone if it is a number that I do not know.

I think I speak for everyone when I say that we hoped our phone numbers would be private, but it seems like nowadays that isn't even a choice.

Last Thursday you did something incredible that helped not only an individual but a family. You helped put a stop to some scammers from getting $20,000.

Last week, according to WGME, a local took out $20,000 from their bank account to buy a bunch of gift cards. These gift cards were not going out to friends and family but instead were going into the hands of scammers.

Luckily, the news station reported, a family member of the individual noticed the withdrawal and was able to reach out to you.

You were able to get to the resident right as they were on the phone with the scammers and starting to give them the gift card information over the phone.

You stopped this scam from happening right then!

$20,000 is A LOT of money, and I do hope that the family is able to get that money back (or at least find something cool to use the gift cards on).

As police, you work together to keep Portland a safer place! I don't think anyone here would disagree. Thank you.
