It may have taken a little longer than people wanted or the company expected but the very first Aldi location in Portland, Maine, has officially celebrated its grand opening.

More than a year ago, news broke that Aldi, a German-based grocery store chain, would finally be making their way to Maine.

Aldi announced they would be occupying the space left behind by Big Lots at the Pine Tree Shopping Center in Portland.

There is No Self-Checkout at Aldi in Portland, Maine

For those that have gotten used to self-checkout at places like Hannaford and Shaw's, you won't find it at Aldi.

What you will find is five checkout lanes. Even on their grand opening day, the checkout lines were moving quickly and smoothly at Aldi.
