What to Expect When Shopping Aldi in Portland, Maine

It may have taken a little longer than people wanted or the company expected but the very first Aldi location in Portland, Maine, has officially celebrated its grand opening.

More than a year ago, news broke that Aldi, a German-based grocery store chain, would finally be making their way to Maine.

Aldi announced they would be occupying the space left behind by Big Lots at the Pine Tree Shopping Center in Portland.

The Portland, Maine, Aldi Store Has a Similar Layout to Trader Joe's

If you've ever visited the Trader Joe's location in Portland, Maine, walking into the new Aldi will feel oddly familiar.

The store has a layout that features dairy, meats and freezer items all on the back and side walls.

Aisles are filled with both brand and off-brand dry goods, condiments and more.

There's a solid produce section as well as en entire wall dedicated to breads and other bakery items.

Aldi Finds Will Become a Favorite in Portland, Maine

Not all Aldi stores are the same but the company clearly made an effort to showcase itself in the Portland, Maine, location.

That includes a wide selection of something the company calls "Aldi Finds". These are rotating items that range from food to household goods that are only featured at Aldi stores for a limited time.

There is No Self-Checkout at Aldi in Portland, Maine

For those that have gotten used to self-checkout at places like Hannaford and Shaw's, you won't find it at Aldi.

What you will find is five checkout lanes. Even on their grand opening day, the checkout lines were moving quickly and smoothly at Aldi.
