Watch: Relive the Entire Night Green Day Played in Portland, Maine, 20 Years Ago
Well, here we are. Two decades have passed since Green Day brought their explosive American Idiot tour to Portland, Maine. Back in April 2005, the band had just dropped the biggest album of their career, reigniting a fire that hadn’t burned this bright since the Dookie days ten years before. So when word got out that they were playing the Cumberland County Civic Center (now the Cross Insurance Arena), Maine fans went full meltdown mode—in the best way.
At the time, Maine’s largest venue could hold a solid crowd, but most arena-level tours still skipped us for Boston. That’s why this show felt extra special. It wasn’t just another stop on the tour—it was a rare moment where Maine landed a band at the absolute peak of their resurgence.
And if that wasn’t enough? My Chemical Romance opened the night—just before they’d go next level with The Black Parade. They were already building momentum, and the crowd knew it. By the time Green Day hit the stage, the Civic Center was basically a powder keg ready to explode.
The April 28, 2005 show sold out fast and delivered everything we wanted—raw energy, iconic lights, a killer setlist, and a crowd that screamed every lyric. Green Day cranked through 20 songs, including seven from American Idiot, plus a blast of classics, covers, and deep cuts.
Fans still talk about that night. Seriously. There’s a fan-run site where people still post reviews and memories of the show, two decades later. It was loud, it was sweaty, and it was unforgettable. And to this day, it remains the last time Green Day played a show in Maine.
The best part of all of this? You can relive the night all over again. Shoutout to YouTuber Srawson for capturing the whole night on video.
